"Dancing with the IRS Wolves: A CEO's
Worst Nightmare"
John Patterson, Senior Program
Director; Nonprofit Risk Management Center
Jacqueline Henson, Esq.; McKenna Long
& Aldridge
The
Internal Revenue Service cited the Fairfield
United Soccer Association (FUSA) for $334,441
in back taxes and penalty fees for failing
to withhold taxes for a dozen paid coaches
and scores of referees. Although nonprofits
are technically not required to comply
with the governance, financial transactions
and audit procedures in the Sarbanes-Oxley
Act, it is important to be familiar with
the disclosure information and recognize
the implications. This employee vs. independent
contractor issue is a potential minefield
for many youth sports leagues. It's time
to stop dancing around the issue. Be informed
and understand the effect on your organization.
10:05am
- 11:00am
Creating Safety Through Integrity,
Vision and Technology
Trish McGonnell; National
Center for Safety Initiatives
The background screening initiative first
began with the youth sports industry taking
its concerns to Capitol Hill. Then came
NCYS being named in the PROTECT Act of
2003. And then
along came The National
Center for Safety Initiatives! NCIS is
relentless in its pursuit of safety! Together
with NCYS, the national center is protecting
children with a revolutionary approach
providing a unique full-service criminal
background screening system specifically
designed for nonprofit youth-serving organizations.
NCSI is a resource not a commercial vendor.
It is the only company licensed to interpret
the results using the NCYS Recommended
Guidelines thus reducing risk and liability
to the organization. Learn why the insurance
companies are recognizing this as the
industry standard and why the United States
Olympic Committee and other prominent
youth organizations have selected NCSI
for its background screening services.

marketing and greater fiscal responsibility
from sports organization and their management.
Delivered by the faculty from The George
Washington University, this certification
is an excellent benefit for you to offer
your own organization's leaders. Already
a "must have" for AAU, JCC,

JCC Maccabi Games
Steve Keener, President & CEO; Little
League Baseball
The
scramble among the sneaker giants for
the nation's elite young athletes has
escalated since the early 1990s, spawning
dozens of company-sponsored teams. Millions
of dollars are being spent on “grassroots"
campaigns to attract children as young
as 12 in their hunt for the next Michael
Jordan or LeBron James, superstars whose
endorsements shape the marketplace. At
what cost is this trend affecting local
teams and leagues? Is this an opportunity
to get those less talented youngsters
off the couch and back into youth sports
OR is this a threat to well-rounded grassroots
sports programs? Your voice will be heard
in this lively “point-counterpoint” town
hall meeting discussion.

"Congressional Rally and Advocacy
Briefing Session"
Bill
Sells, Director of Government Relations;
Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association
Hear from an influential Washington professional
about the important role that associations
play in the legislative process. Congress
needs experts (that's you!) from the real
world to be informed on public policy
issues and make the best decisions on
behalf of their constituents. Let's capitalize
on our political power.
Learn how the appropriations process works
and how the PROTECT Act, and the Adam
Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act,
LWCF and other pieces of legislation could
bring grant monies to your organization.
Become
skilled at how to navigate the political
process and advocate the issues. Tell
Congress to make physical activity a priority
for our nation by making it more accessible
and more affordable. You will be well-briefed
on advocacy tips and the talking points
of Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT)
a bill designed to increase physical activity
and team sports by easing the financial
burden of being physically active.
